NEW FORMAT OF CAT 2011;

The Common Admission Test (CAT) has been given a makeover in 2011 with respect to a brand new format.

CAT dates have been declared as October 22 and November 18, 2011.

Changes in CAT

According to an official statement announced by Prometric, CAT 2011 will have two sections instead of three.
- Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation will be one section, while Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning will be the other.
- There will be 60 questions: 30 in each section.

Time limits

Students will be given an additional five minutes for completing the test. The total time given to students to complete the test will be 140 minutes.
This means that a student has 70 minutes to answer 30 questions under each section with an on-screen countdown timer.
Once the time ends for the first section, they would have to move on to the second section and won't be allowed to go back.
A 15-minute tutorial will be added to guide the students through the process and new format.

What does the change mean for students?

Students will have to study the same areas as before, but will only have to get cut-offs for two sections instead of three.

Studying for CAT

Students will need to update their approach to CAT 2011. Time management for different sections will have to change.
You have to:
- be equally good at both sections
- be aware that you cannot come back to a section, although you can come back to a question in a section within the time limit.

Difference Between BBA and B.Com ;

One of the Most Common Confusion amongst commerce students (After class 12th) now a days is related to choice between BBA and B Com.   Though B.Com is a more traditional course compared to BBA, over the years things have changed with the economy of the country. BBA has emerged as an important option among students after completing Class 12. Many students are confused due to lack of proper information and guidance and often end up making a wrong choice. This article will help you clear your doubts and confusion. I hope you would be able to distinguish between two and decide about your future endavour.

What is BBA

Bachelor of Business Administration or BBA is a three year degree course which is designed to impart management education and inculcate entrepreneurship skills in a student. It is a professional degree where theoretical concepts like Management information systems, fundamentals of Human Resource Management (HRM), Financial Law, and fundamentals of marketing are taught and supplemented by practical experience of case studies, industry visits, presentations and summer placements. A well structured BBA program develops a student's intellectual and managerial skills and helps in nurturing leadership qualities and trains them to be future leaders. Those who are serious about business and its processes, its definitely a better option for them.

Eligibility: Passed 12th in any stream and have obtained 50% marks in average. (Though it varies from institute to institute or university)

Scope after BBA:

The determining factor of choosing BBA over B.Com is a job in the field of management or shaping your career as an entrepreneur. So, the most obvious step after BBA is MBA or Masters in Business Administration. A BBA degree by itself might fetch you a job at the entry level, but will not provide you with enough growth opportunities unless you follow it up with an MBA from an institute of repute. Armed with a BBA degree, getting through some of the top B schools in the country should be a smoother one compared to others, though ofcourse cracking the CAT is a different game altogether. MBA courses are much advanced compared to BBA programs, but now that you have your fundamentals clear at the undergraduate level, your MBA program should be much simpler.

BBA also enables you to get a job as a trainee or even as a junior executive in the fields of marketing, HR or finance. Industry experience will also give you the much needed exposure and a work experience certificate which is almost mandatory for pursuing MBA degrees in some of the top MBA schools in India.

Industries offering jobs to BBA graduates:

BBA graduates can seek job openings in the following sectors:

  • Banking
  • Consultancy
  • Finance
  • FMCG and Consumer Durable Companies
  • IT companies
  • Advertising agencies

What is B.Com

Bachelor of Commerce or B.Com is a fundamental stream of study after class 12 in India. B.Com is a three year degree course taught in most universities across India. A B.Com degree equips a student with fundamentals and concepts on Accountancy, Business Administration, Finance, Economics and Industrial policies.

Eligibility: A student who has passed 12th in commerce or in science stream can pursue B.Com as an undergraduate degree. However, he or she should have Mathematics as one of the core subjects.

Scope after B.Com: B.Com is and always has been a lucrative career option among students. It is the first big step for students who wish to pursue careers in Finance, Taxation and Accountancy. It is the basic qualification required for students who want to pursue a career as CA / ICWA / CS. After completing your B.Com, a student can further his academic qualification by doing an M.Com from a recognized university. MCom is a postgraduate degree of 2 years and will enable a student to even qualify for lectureship exams like UGC NET/JRF or even state level exams. Though B.Com is not a professional course, yet if you complete your B.Com from a reputed university, you also have the option for good placement in various industries.

You can even do your MBA after B.Com and specialize in finance, if you still want to be remotely connected with commerce and you are good with numbers.

Industries offering jobs to B.Com students

  • Banks
  • Consultancy firms
  • Tax Practitioner
  • Junior Accountant

Difference Between BBA and B.Com

To understand the difference between these two degrees you have to understand that If you are good at numbers or financial computations, then your aim should be that of a Chartered Accountant or CA. It is an extremely specialized area and a B.Com degree is the first step towards achieving that goal.

On the other hand, if you are sure that you want to pursue a career in management, then BBA is a good alternative, though you can still pursue your MBA after B.Com. However, you can get good work experience after completing your BBA in areas of your interest.

If you are planning to start your professional career immediately after class 12, BBA is a good choice as it is a professional course compared to B.Com which is a stream in the general line
.

B.Com is offered in some of the more prestigious universities and colleges in India like Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) Delhi, Loyola College (Chennai), St Xavier's College (Kolkata), Presidency College (Chennai), Symbiosis Society's College of Arts & Commerce (Pune), and St Xaviers Mumbai.

Please refer to the list appended in this blog for Top commerce colleges in india.

BBA is offered in fewer universities compared to BCom, though many universities have started with BBA or BBS courses. Some of the colleges and universities offering BBA courses are University of Mumbai, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University or IP University, Delhi, Bharti Vidya Peeth, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Deemed Univ , Jamia Hamdard, Symbiosis Pune, Barkatullah University , Bhopal, Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, Banasthali Vidyapeeth, University of Rajasthan.

Along with the option of pursing MBA, a B.Com will open doors for other commerce related careers as well.

Consider the following tabular form for the difference

Sn Bases B Com BBA

1 Course Traditional Professional
2 Good for Students in love with Numbers Students with Soft, leadership Skills
3 Help ful for CA / ICWA MBA
4 Marks required in 12th High %age required for top colleges Less marks required Comparatively
5 Jobs offered Accountant, Auditor, Analyst Management Trainee

Difference between B.Com (Honours) and B.Com (Pass) ;

A number of students get confused after their class 12th result, whether to opt for B com - Honours or B com - Pass. and why is it that the cut-off for one B.Com [H] course is more than that of the other B.Com [pass] course even though both courses teach you similar things? Let us find out the answer with the help of the following article.

B.Com (Honours)

B.Com (H) is an undergraduate degree designed to inculcate business acumen in students. The course curriculum includes subjects like organisational behaviour, cost accounting
and then one can specialize in fields like accounts and economics. You can also pursue courses like Chartered Accountancyalong with your B.Com. You can better your skills by pursuing post graduation courses like MBA or M.Com.

Eligibility

Apart from this, you can go for higher education, by pursuing courses like an MBA or an M.Com.

B.Com (Pass)

The course is similar to B.Com (H). The difference lies in the fact that you can specialize in a certain subject in B.Com (H), but the B.Com (P) course gives you an overview of all those subjects taught in the honours course.

Eligibility

12th or equivalent, with Maths and English as compulsory subjects.

Scope
You can pursue higher education after your graduation. You can pursue courses like MBA or M.Com. Compared to the honours course, the job opportunities are a little less, after pursuing this course.

Ambedkar University Announces Second Cut-Off List ;

Ambedkar University (AU) came out with its second cut-off list for its undergraduate courses on Thursday. And as the high cut-offs at Delhi University (DU) may have disappointed many but those who want to pursue courses in social sciences still have a chance.

The list saw a substantial dip in cut-off marks, especially for students from the city. AU, being a stateuniversity, reserves 85% of its seats for students from the Capital. So, while cut-offs for Economics saw a dip of 7% for Delhiites, other courses, such as English and Psychology, saw a dip of 6% and 4% respectively.

The response to courses in the relatively new university, however, has been better than last year. The three most popular undergraduate courses have been Economics, English and Psychology.

The third list, if any, will be declared on July 15. There is also some good news for those students who could not apply tothe university in time. This third list will also include the names of those students who couldn't apply to the university by the last date but fulfill the cut-off criteria.

The state university, which was established by the Delhi Government in 2008, has eight undergraduate courses and eight undergraduate courses  in social sciences.

Credit system has been adopted by the university and an undergraduate student is required to earn 96 credits to earn a BA (honours) degree.

At the university, the undergraduate courses are flexible. Students do not start studying their major subjects until the third Semsester Until then, students study basic foundation courses in English and social sciences. It gives students a chance to choose their major subjects wisely.

Best engineering colleges in North India;

A comprehensive list of IITs, NITs, deemed universities and private institutes in Delhi,Haryana Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Punjab.

India's Top 50 Engineering Colleges 2011

Ranking the top colleges is a very difficult task. While it is relatively easy to create clusters of colleges, it is differentiating within clusters that became the most difficult exercise. So for the first time in the country we have used balanced scorecard methodology to arrive at the ranking of the top 50 colleges. Ranking methodology: We scanned the last five year rankings of about 241 colleges and normalised their ranks, by assigning differential weights to subjective and objective ranking. Such a process is used to develop clusters of institutions. The research standing of individual institutions were further used to refine the clusters and remove the odd men out. Individual clusters were ranked serially. In each of these clusters the differences in cut-off marks, wherever possible (like in case of IITs and AIEEE institutes and some States) were used to arrive at individual ranks. Heavily dominated by public institutions, the top-50 listing is a roll call of excellence India's top 50 engineering institutions 2011

Open Learning the last resort for DU aspirants now

Open Learning the last resort for DU aspirants now
At a time when Delhi University (DU) colleges have put up high cut-offs for admission, its School of Open Learning (SOL) that offers distance learning courses is swamped with applications - emerging as a ray of hope for students who do not meet the high criteria of the colleges.

SOL, which receives over 300,000 applications annually, offers courses in humanities and commerce streams through distance learning programmes.

"Students who find it difficult to clear the cut-offs of DU and still want the university's tag are coming for the courses here," SOL assistant registrar S.K. Lamba told sources.

"Some students these days want to learn and earn at the same time; so they join SOL," he added.

Many of the students joining SOL are able to pursue a vocational course as well as a course of their choice through distance learning.

The USP of the distance learning school is that students do not have to attend classes compulsorily which take place only on weekends.

Students who have taken up professional courses like chartered accountancy come for distance learning courses as they don't have to attend classes at SOL and are thus able to devote time to both.

The School offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in arts and commerce subjects. Printed course material is distributed to the students and the fees is, like all DU colleges, very low.

Parents of students are also supportive of their wards taking up these courses.

Age is no bar at SOL. The institution gets many applications from people who left studies long ago.

The institution had 900 students when it started in 1962. The number reached several hundreds of thousands last year.

"The huge number of candidates is because of the fact that there are not enough number of seats and colleges in the country that can accommodate the growing number of students," Lamba pointed out.

SOL follows the policy of granting admission to all applicants if they have scored the minimum marks - which is 40 percent.

Delhi University was established in 1962. It has 16 faculties, 86 academic departments, 77 colleges and five other recognised institutes spread all over the city.

IIM-Indore to launch integrated course for class XII students

Final selection of students would be made through an aptitude test and personal interview
Indian Institute of Management Indore will launch from this academic session a five-year integrated post-graduate programme (PGP) in management for students passing class 12th or equivalent courses.
This is perhaps for the first time that an IIM is launching a programme at the undergraduate level.
"Beginning with 120 seats, eligibility criteria for this programme is 60 per cent aggregate marks at secondary/10th standard and higher secondary/10+2 level or equivalent for general category students," IIM-Indore Director N Ravichandran told.
As per the norms, OBC, SC/ST students'' eligibility percentage would be 55 and seats would be reserved for them from the total 120, he said.
Final selection of students would be made through an aptitude test and personal interview, Ravichandran said.
The annual fee will be Rs 3 lakh for first three years. In fourth and fifth year it would go up to Rs 5 lakh. Fee relaxation for reserved classes will be as per the norms, he said, adding boarding and lodging charges will be separate.
PGP syllabus will cover subjects like mathematics, statistics, logic, computer sciences, introduction to literature and political science, history, exposure to biological sciences, languages, soft skills including leadership and personality developments, he said.
Asked what prompted IIM here to start this course, he said, "So far students were joining master''s programme after doing engineering, B Tech and other courses. We think the right time for selection of students for management is after Class 12th. We anticipate that the course would be a success and later on other IIMs would adopt our module."
