India's Top 50 Engineering Colleges 2011

Ranking the top colleges is a very difficult task. While it is relatively easy to create clusters of colleges, it is differentiating within clusters that became the most difficult exercise. So for the first time in the country we have used balanced scorecard methodology to arrive at the ranking of the top 50 colleges. Ranking methodology: We scanned the last five year rankings of about 241 colleges and normalised their ranks, by assigning differential weights to subjective and objective ranking. Such a process is used to develop clusters of institutions. The research standing of individual institutions were further used to refine the clusters and remove the odd men out. Individual clusters were ranked serially. In each of these clusters the differences in cut-off marks, wherever possible (like in case of IITs and AIEEE institutes and some States) were used to arrive at individual ranks. Open Learning the last resort for DU aspirants now

At a time when Delhi University (DU) colleges have put up high cut-offs for admission, its School of Open Learning (SOL) that offers distance learning courses is swamped with applications - emerging as a ray of hope for students who do not meet the high criteria of the colleges. SOL, which receives over 300,000 applications annually, offers courses in humanities and commerce streams through distance learning programmes. "Students who find it difficult to clear the cut-offs of DU and still want the university's tag are coming for the courses here," SOL assistant registrar S.K. Lamba told sources. "Some students these days want to learn and earn at the same time; so they join SOL," he added. Many of the students joining SOL are able to pursue a vocational course as well as a course of their choice through distance learning. The USP of the distance learning school is that students do not have to attend classes compulsorily which take place only on weekends. Students who have taken up professional courses like chartered accountancy come for distance learning courses as they don't have to attend classes at SOL and are thus able to devote time to both. The School offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in arts and commerce subjects. Printed course material is distributed to the students and the fees is, like all DU colleges, very low. Parents of students are also supportive of their wards taking up these courses. Age is no bar at SOL. The institution gets many applications from people who left studies long ago. The institution had 900 students when it started in 1962. The number reached several hundreds of thousands last year. "The huge number of candidates is because of the fact that there are not enough number of seats and colleges in the country that can accommodate the growing number of students," Lamba pointed out. SOL follows the policy of granting admission to all applicants if they have scored the minimum marks - which is 40 percent. Delhi University was established in 1962. It has 16 faculties, 86 academic departments, 77 colleges and five other recognised institutes spread all over the city.

IIM-Indore to launch integrated course for class XII students

Indian Institute of Management Indore will launch from this academic session a five-year integrated post-graduate programme (PGP) in management for students passing class 12th or equivalent courses.

This is perhaps for the first time that an IIM is launching a programme at the undergraduate level.

"Beginning with 120 seats, eligibility criteria for this programme is 60 per cent aggregate marks at secondary/10th standard and higher secondary/10+2 level or equivalent for general category students," IIM-Indore Director N Ravichandran told.

As per the norms, OBC, SC/ST students'' eligibility percentage would be 55 and seats would be reserved for them from the total 120, he said.

Final selection of students would be made through an aptitude test and personal interview, Ravichandran said.

The annual fee will be Rs 3 lakh for first three years. In fourth and fifth year it would go up to Rs 5 lakh. Fee relaxation for reserved classes will be as per the norms, he said, adding boarding and lodging charges will be separate.

PGP syllabus will cover subjects like mathematics, statistics, logic, computer sciences, introduction to literature and political science, history, exposure to biological sciences, languages, soft skills including leadership and personality developments, he said.

Asked what prompted IIM here to start this course, he said, "So far students were joining master''s programme after doing engineering, B Tech and other courses. We think the right time for selection of students for management is after Class 12th. We anticipate that the course would be a success and later on other IIMs would adopt our module."
